TRIGUN, currently on the air in Japan, is fast becoming one of the more popular anime shows to debut this year. "Deep Space Planet Future Gun Action"—as this english copy taken from the original manga by Nightow Yasuhiro implies, TRIGUN is a mixture of Science Fiction and Western. This bizarre combination brings about interesting collection of music: from groovy techno to country western, with occasional hard rock and latin samba.. Guitar plays an essential role in this soundtrack; one explanation for this is that series director Nishimura Satoshi is a big Led Zeppelin fan. He was wearing a Zeppelin T-shirt at the meeting with Mr. Imahori to discuss what kind of music TRIGUN should have. And they decided Zeppelin was the answer.
The main the reason I bought this CD was H.T, the OP theme. The hard rock electric guitar sound perfectly matches with the animation and makes it probably one of the best OP this season.
Track 4, is titled KNIVES. Knives is the name of the archenemy of Vash the Stampede, but he has not yet appeared in the show. But somehow, this track doesn't really sound like what I thought the character's theme would be. A better match is track 20, PERFECT NIGHT. But this track is used in the TV episode when Regato, his assassin, first appears.
The CD also includes a song called SOUND LIFE—LEM (track 10) which is first heard at the end of the BRILLIANT DYNAMITES NEON episode. While the song itself is not bad, the singer AJA does not have the vocal presence or delivery to make this song as outstanding as it could have been. The character LEM that this song represents is important, as she was killed by Knives and that is why Vash is wandering around on this planet.
The ED song KAZE WA MIRAI NI FUKU (THE WIND BLOWS TOWARDS THE FUTURE) is performed by AKIMA & NEOS. It also has a very hard-rock feel, but it is not as good as some of the other tracks on the disc. It is still, however, a nice ED song. (This song is now available on CD single as well).
Musician by musician Imahori Tsuneo does a good job of blending a wide variety of styles into a comprehensive musical world. Even with many different musical styles, he manages to find a way to hold all the tracks together.
Overall, this CD is cool; the music really matches the atmosphere of the show and helps to provide additional depth to the world of TRIGUN. I recommend it for anyone who likes TRIGUN. (As an additional note, the CD is subtitled FIRST DONUTS, which probably means that at least one more CD will be released in the future. Stay tuned).
